“The Fisher House program is a unique private-public partnership that supports America’s military in their time of need. Because members of the military and their families are stationed worldwide and must often travel great distances for specialized medical care, Fisher House Foundation donates “comfort homes,” built on the grounds of major military and VA medical centers. These homes enable family members to be close to a loved one at the most stressful times – during the hospitalization for an unexpected illness, disease, or injury.”
The Gist
Think of them as the military family version of Ronald McDonald House. According to Kathleen, a volunteer from Ft Campbell, “[Their] goal is that someone can show up at their doorstep and have everything they need (toothpaste, toothbrush, clothes, electric scooters, laptops, movies, etc.) and it’s all completely free to the family.”
Services
Almost every major military medical center has at least one Fisher House nearby which provides a comforting haven for service members and their families caring for and supporting ill or injured loved ones. The Fisher House foundation is responsible for building each of the individual Fisher House homes, and they also offer a variety of programs including educational scholarships to military spouses and children with the National Military Family Association, the Hero Miles program, which provides airline tickets to veterans and their families and co-sponsors the Newman’s Own Award, which grants $75,000 to a variety of volunteer organizations.

The Good
The homes, which usually offer eight to twenty-one suites—which can house between sixteen to forty-two families—are all completely furnished and decorated in a stylish, cohesive theme. Fort Campbell’s Fisher House, for example, is completely decked out in Pottery Barn furnishings. Built to offer both a private respite and sense of community, the homes are usually within walking distance of the medical facility and boast toys for children, a common kitchen area, a dining room, library and laundry facilities. Since its inception nearly twenty years ago, the 38 Fisher Houses have served more than 100,000 families.
The Bad
It’s hard to find anyone who’s had beef with Fisher House, but so far the only complaints we’ve drummed up stem from the slightly inconsistent standards held across the board. As one volunteer says, “Once it’s up and running, [the Fisher House Foundation] hands the keys over to the installation’s General, and they’re responsible for it.” This leads to some Fisher Houses being nicer, cleaner and better staffed than others, but across the board, this organization receives consistently high marks from both volunteers and guests of the homes.
The Iffy
Fisher House relies largely on donations to keep itself going, but the difference between the Fisher House Foundation (the CFC organization) and individual Fisher Homes at installations can be confusing. The foundation is responsible for collecting funds, building homes and running their programs, whereas individual homes rely on local donations to fill their tables and cabinets. “You can donate anything locally,” explains one volunteer, “food, brownies, toothbrushes, toilet plungers.” But they caution, “The CFC is great, but all those donations go to the foundation, if someone wants to make a difference at their local Fisher House, they need to talk to their local proprietor about how to donate. Giving locally goes to paying for some of the bills like Sam’s Club or Walmart that local businesses don’t provide.”
Overall Assessment
As Kathleen explains, “They offer a sense of family. A home when yhou’re not at home. It doesn’t feel like you’re staying at the hospital, it feels like you’re staying at a bed and breakfast.
