The Decrepit State of DoD Schools

QUANTICO, Va. -- More than three-quarters of the schools run by the Department of Defense Education Authority on military bases around the world are either beyond repair or would require extensive renovations before they meet the department's minimum standards, including three on Marine Corps Base Quantico rated as "poor" or "failing," according to the Center for Public Integrity.

Under the DoD's own grading of its schools which was submitted in reports to Congress in 2008 and 2009, Ashurst Elementary School was rated as "poor" while Russell Elementary School and Quantico Middle/High School were each rated as "failing."

The failing rating means it would cost more to renovate a school than to replace it, explained Kristen Lombardi, a reporter with the Center for Public Integrity's iWatch News, which compiled the report.
"Quantico is not an aberration," she stressed.
