Regardless of where your state ranks when it comes to crime statistics it never hurts to take safety precautions, especially if your service member is deployed and you are alone. While there are no guaranteed ways to avoid becoming a victim, there are steps you can take to try to prevent being an easy target.
Not so Strange
When most people think about crime they likely think of the perpetrator as being a stranger. Yet the Bureau of Justice Statistics reports that around 70 percent of female rape or sexual assault victims knew the offender. Most of the victims stated that the offenders were intimates, relatives, friends or acquaintances.
“The majority of rapes happen in your home or the home of a friend or relative,” explains Brad Parker, founder of the Rape Escape method and director of Defend University (www.defendu.com), a virtual campus for self defense. “Any situation or place in which an attacker has the privacy and the time to trap you and attack you without being discovered is a vulnerable place,” says Parker.
Some examples of high risk situations include letting a salesperson or other stranger into your home; using the laundry room in your apartment building alone even though you have used it many times before; and walking closely to a car to offer directions or answer a question.
Sticky Situations
“It used to be popular to tell women that if they’re being attacked they should yell fire,” says Stephanie Angelo, who specializes in domestic abuse awareness and teaching children and teens about safety through her two companies. “Law enforcement professionals now suggest that a woman should scream for all she’s worth to bring attention to herself,” says Angelo. Once the offender knows that people are aware of a problem then it may prevent the crime from going further.
“A study of more than 3,000 sexual assaults showed that when women even indicated that they were willing to resist, half of all would-be rapists broke off the attack,” says Parker. That’s good news because if you fight back you dramatically reduce your odds of being attacked. Never allow yourself to be taken to another location by an offender. Fight with everything you’ve got because the chances of you making it back are slim.
Prevention Tips
Crime can happen anywhere, any time and to anyone. The following tips can help prevent you from being a target.
Keep your guard up. If you don’t know someone really well then the best way to avoid becoming a victim of a surprise attack is to not put yourself in a vulnerable situation. For an assault to take place the perpetrator needs privacy, avoid being alone with anyone that you haven’t known for a while or that you are at least in earshot of someone hearing you if you were to yell for help. An underlying factor in many date rape cases is alcohol consumption avoid drinking with people that you don’t know very well, especially on first dates. At the first sign that someone is aggressive or will not take no for answer that is your cue to get away. Keep in mind when dating that if someone seems too good to be true they most likely are and they could be working to get you to let your guard down.
Surroundings. Always take the time to be aware of your surroundings. You’ve heard it before but think about many times you’ve seen women distracted with cell phones or digging in their purse for keys while walking to their car. Take notice of the people around you to see if anyone is coming toward you or following you. When making purchases avoid showing people large amounts of cash you may have.
Lighting. Opt for places that are well-lit and are out in the open. When you go to a mall make sure you park under a light even if it’s still daylight when you go in. If you are out shopping and it’s dark out when you go to leave you can always ask security to escort you to your car.
Walking. When walking outdoors make sure you walk with confidence and keep a steady pace to avoid looking vulnerable. If you are walking near traffic, walk on the side of the street that faces the oncoming cars. Stay close to the curb to avoid doorways, bushes and alleys where people can easily hide.
Distance. Keep your distance from anyone that asks you for directions or money. Never go near a car to answer a question for someone. If you think that someone may be following you or that you are in danger don’t hesitate to do whatever is necessary to attract help.
Cars. Always keep your car door locked whether you are in it or not. Make sure that you look inside and around your car before getting in and if you think you are being followed drive to a police station or public place. Be aware of those that are parked next to you in parking lots. If your car happens to break down attach a white cloth to the antenna and open the hood. If anyone stops to help, stay in your car and ask the person to call the police for you. Avoid leaving your garage door opener in a visible area of your car where people can easily grab it and gain access to your garage.
Home. When it comes to your house make sure you keep your doors and windows locked and keep a good deadbolt lock on your door. Try to leave a porch light on or get motion sensor lights and keep bushes neatly trimmed so that they can’t be used as hiding places for potential offenders. Always use the peep hole when someone comes to the door and exercise caution when choosing whether or not to open the door for someone. When in doubt opt to not open the door to a stranger. Be sure to also keep your garage door closed.
Learning Self Defense
“Defending yourself in a realistic situation is not going to be choreographed, it’s not going to be planned,” says Joy Ackerman, an instructor at Krav Maga in Phoenix, Ariz., where they teach a hand to hand combat system. “It’s going to be something you need to have that’s instinctual that will fly from you, that you can survive a realistic confrontation,”
There are several places around the city that have self defense classes and seminars for women. You will likely never regret making the decision to take a self defense course. “This is something that is so empowering for women,” says Ackerman. “It’s a self blooming personality change when you learn to defend yourself.”

Time – around 53% of violent crimes occurred between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m., although 65% of rape and sexual assault occurred between 6 p.m. to 6 a.m.
Weapons – were used in 11% of all rape and sexual assaults and 24% of all violent crimes

Self defense is a subject I have not heard discussed surprisingly even at pre-deployment briefs. With the Army trying so hard to make sure family's of service members are perpared I would think that there would be self defense classes at every post. When my now husband was deployed for "my" first time, my teenager and I took 3 semesters of self-defense classes at the local community college. The ironic thing is that the instructor was a retired marine. Master McGee help give my daughter and myself the confidence and skills to handle things without a man around.

I can attest to the idea of yelling. When I was a 6th grader, a man ran up behind me as I was walking home from school, alone & in broad daylight. When I heard the sound of his sneakers as he was trying to stop, I turned around and despite the fact that it was only me & him on the side street, when I screamed HEY he immediately ran away from me. I had seen the man on the school playground and kept walking. A few minutes later I had seen the man duck behind a tree. Right after that I heard his sneakers. Bottom line to the story...if your gut says something isnt right, mine did but I wasnt wise enough to realize it yet, go with your gut. I was lucky that my scream scared him off. I dont know what he wouldve done if he had gotten his hands on me...I imagine he wouldve raped me at the very least. He got away, but he didnt hurt me physically. Psychologically it left a mark...and Im now hyper aware of when someone is behind me and up to no good some 20+ years later.
