Hi, my name is Dani & my boyfriend (of 3 years) is just finishing BMT right now in Texas. Right after he'll be leaving to go to Mississippi for tech school, & won't be home till the end of August. He'll be there 6 months, & brought up the idea of us getting an apartment off base...

So here are my questions:
1. Is it even possible?
2. Do we have to be married in order for that to happen?

I just really need some information!
Thank you all !

Hi and welcome!!!! :-) You can live off base and no you don't have to be married. But if you want to be able to get on base by yourself, you do need to be married. You will be able to go on base with him, but not by yourself. Hope this helps. Do you know if he is going to Keesler in Mississippi? We have some friends there and it's a really nice place. We just visited there in fact. I am here in Texas also. We live in Houston. Welcome to the club of Air Force wifes and girlfriends. :-)

Um sorry I disagree with Malorie; he can only live off base when he has either been in the Military 3 years or he reaches Senior Airman...whichever comes first. You cannot move off base fresh out of Tech School unless you are married. My husband got special permission to move off of base a few months early but they only allowed it because his dorm was full and they needed the space.

Sorry for the double post...also just to clarify..he and I weren't married then...we were just dating. That's why he needed permission.

You could very much be right. When my DH went through training he was allowed to live off base. It could have changed since he has gone through training though. :-)

The only way you he could live off base is if you guys were married otherwise he has to be in for about 3 years before they will consider letting him move off base.

We are currently at Keesler for my husband's tech school. I don't know of anyone straight from BMT that lives off base who isn't married. You could move down here & see him when he's allowed off base, but as the other ladies said you wouldn't be able to get on base without him with you.
You yourself could absolutely move here and get your own place, but he wouldn't be able to live with you. I believe he needs to get privileges before he's allowed off base, but I'm not 100% how that works now. It's been 6 years since my hubby did BMT & his first tech school.

If I were you, I'd save yourself the money & stress to move here for only 6 months and just plan on visiting a couple times.

They can only live off base if they are married AND if their schooling is 20 weeks or longer & even then they have to be approved. I live 2 minutes off base of Keesler where my husband is at for tech & he isn't allowed to live her. He can only visit after class & stay on the weekends.
