Hi -

We are going to be moving to Virginia this summer (probably mid to late June) since hubby is being transferred to JEB Little Creek.  I was wondering if anyone had any info about the military housing out there.  Since hubby is going to be going on deployments I would prefer to live near other military families but I've been finding any mix reviews about the housing areas.

Second question, if we end up renting in town what is a good area to rent in.  We need to look for at least a 3 bdrm (would love 4).  Has anyone used a rental company and has good experience.  We do have 2 animals so we would prefer to live in a house versus an apartment.

Thanks
Nikki

I live in housing right outside Little Creek. It's okay. They're having a lot of problems with mold and we have a roach issue. We're a family of 5 and hubs was a 3rd class when we moved in here, and we couldn't afford a nice 3 bedroom or 4 bedroom with BAH rates. Renting is pretty pricey because there's so many military people here. Expect to spend around 1200/mo rent if you rent a house or townhouse. You can find apartment for cheaper, but not much. That's why we moved into housing-it's mainly townhouses or duplex's here.

Jen - which housing area do you live in?

I've been looking at rental prices and compared to where I am currently in San Diego it's actually a lot better priced for similar sized houses or townhouses.

Nikki - also remember, the difference with your BAH once you go to hampton roads. We moved from VA to CA this summer and our BAH went up nearly $400 I think it was, due to it being that much more expensive in CA.

And then I talk to my friends from the town I grew up in... they'll spend $300 renting a HOUSE lol and we spend $2,000 renting in military housing :p SUCH a vast difference!

I've been looking at rentals within what our BAH will be when we move to Virginia. It's quite a bit lower than what we currently receive here.

Where we currently live we have a 1400 sq ft townhouse and we pay $1850 for it. Things similar size in the area of Virginia we are looking are a lot lower priced.

we are probably moving to VA and we have been looking in the chesapeake and suffolk areas. we are finding a lot within our BAH but BAH just went down we used to get 200 more a month we had to lower the ceiling of what we were looking at. we are also thinking about buying. there are a lot of inexpensive houses to buy there

Hi, we looked at all of our housing choices, before we chose the in Chesapeake. I think it's between a 30-45 minute drive from housing to Little Creek/NOB/NNSY Portsmouth. I know they still offer 4 bedroom ranch style homes, most have decent yards and at the very least a 1 car garage. I noticed when looking at the houses the ones in Chespeake seemed to have larger rooms and more space in general.  Shannon

I think we're going to look more in the Virginia Beach area. We're trying not to have hubby drive as much since his current commute is 45 minutes (on a good day). I've found several possibilities so we will be doing some major house hunting once we get there. I don't want to get into a place without being able to see inside in person.
