Alright ladies, Here is our book club starting point. This is the first month so we will try some things out and part of our discussion will be: do we want to read faster? Different genre's? questions, etc. Basically we are playing this month kind of "by ear"

This month’s book is “The Glass Castle” by Jeannette Walls and it should be finished by Sept 15.

On August 27th, I will post a few chatty questions to get the ball rolling on the first part of the book.

On Sept 4th I will post a few more questions on the middle of the book.

Then on Sept 15th we can all come together and discuss what we thought of this book and what changes we would like for the book club!

I will keep posting a new book and questions (however often we decide) as long as there is at least ONE response on these forums, once there is no response then we will discontinue it. Discussions will never close, you can continue to chat about a book for years if you like. However, I will expect there to be at least ONE post about the book by Sept. 22.

Happy Reading y’all!!

Julie

I'm with you Joy. I may join for the next book. Just don't have the time or money (I know the book isn't expensive but with all these appointments I have I seriously have NO money! :/ ) for this book.

Bah! I wish I had read this a couple of days ago, so I could've picked the book up while I was in Wichita Falls or stopped on my way home to get it. The only place to get books here is Wal-Mart which the selection is slim pickins if you don't like harlequin type romance novels, westerns or spiritual books. Guess I will be Amazoning this one.

I just found the site last night and I am very excited to be able to find a book club. I am going to go get the book tomorrow and read it when I don't have to study.

Hey y'all, sorry this is a day late! But here are some questions regarding the Glass Castle.

Define neglect.

Was Jeannette neglected as a child?

If so, how was she neglected?

Did the parents neglect their children on purpose?

Why did Jeannette's parents treat her and her siblings in this way?

Define neglect.
IMO, neglect is when you are not properly cared for.

Was Jeannette neglected as a child?

I think to a certain degree, yes. It seems that her parents cared, but not as much as most parents should care about their children. It almost seemed as if they were trying to 'harden' them up, but then again, it could just seem this way and they really just made up excuses as to why they were raised the way they were.

If so, how was she neglected?

Her parents didn't seem to keep an eye on her (hence her dress starting on fire). I don't think a 3 year old should be cooking hot dogs... Her parents leaving the kids in the car while they sat in the bar for hours, only to give them a candy bar for dinner.

Did the parents neglect their children on purpose?

I don't know.. It seems like they knew what they were doing, maybe their life was just 'normal' to them, but they should know what is right and what is wrong when it comes to raising kids.

Why did Jeannette's parents treat her and her siblings in this way?
I think they treated them like this because they don't want them to be like the 'other' children of the world. They didn't want them to be spoiled brats, and they wanted them to see the world in a different light. They wanted them to be strong kids, not having to depend on no one but themselves.

Oh goody! I've already read it but I can re read it. Is there anyway a reminder could be posted in W&C to come back and discuss on the 15th? Quite frankly, I'm pretty sleep deprived and I don't want to miss it :p
