What are your thoughts about wives/gf etc having moto tattoos?

IMO I wouldn't get one because I haven't earned the right to wear a EGA or "Semper Fi."

They're not for me but I really don't care if I see it on someone else.

I agree with Suzanne. Of all the tattoos that are out there, I'd much rather see those.

I can see how the OP feels, to an extent. However while we didn't "earn" it, it's still a huge part of our lives. I would like to get an anchor eventually. I was born a Navy brat and my DH is in the Navy, so the Navy obviously means a lot to me.

I like tattoos. But I definitely think that women should act like a Lady and it should be hidden when wearing normal clothing. I would just assume if it was a girlfriend that she was probably a "tag chaser" (sorry i don't like the term and I certainly wouldn't call some one out on it unless they had many military boyfriends). I have a DF, two brothers, and a future BIL who all serve I think that military tattoos should be for those serving. I did see a very classy anchor and heart tattoo that read "Loving him from port to port" I thought it had good symbolism.

I think it depends on the circumstances and the tattoo. For example just a straight eagle globe an anchor, I could see how someone could say she didn't earn the right to wear it and I think its looked down upon by military members. But a tattoo like Brayd's lady mentioned I could see. I agree with Orion maybe we didnt earn the right to wear the uniform, but it is still a huge part of our lives and we make a lot of sacrifices for this lifestyle. *I* personally am very supersicious about tattooing anything for a significant other even a husband. No I don't expect my husband and I to get divorced, but in this day....you just never know. However I also have a brother in the marines and if anything ever happened to either my husband or my brother I would get a marine corps inspired tattoo in their honor.

And I hope I don't offend, but I dont think g/f should get any type of moto tattoo you just never know if the relationship is going to end in marriage or not. Not a risk I would want to take so early on.

I'll admit, it always makes me think that when I see a gf with a tattoo. In fact, I saw on FB somewhere that a gf got this pretty detailed tattoo and then next thing you know, she was having it covered b/c they broke up!!! But, if that's what they want to do...more power to ya!!!

A friend has one that is the USMC emblem with a wedding band wrapped around it. It's really nice.

Now it isn't for me, cause I like having a really clear line between where the USMC ends and I begin But I can't see being offended by it.

This. I have 2 tattoos, and they are on the back of my shoulders, neither larger than a silver dollar. We have dear friends that we've known for years, and until I took my wrap off one night out dancing, they had no idea I had any.

DH's friend gasped and said "Christy YOU HAVE INK????"

Uh, yeah. Got one in '96 and one in '01.

i personally dont like them and the 3 people I know personally who have a navy tattoo got divorced shortly after and they regretted it. I am not a big tattoo person though in general but they got huge anchors that take up their entire foot. I think something small wouldnt be as bad. I guess it just depends on the person but I wont be getting one any time soon (or ever).

While it is none of my business, I think its quite silly. But for some reason there are a lot of EOD wives that have the EOD crab tattooed on themselves, they are neither Marines nor EOD techs. I think its ridiculous and I know a lot of the guys make fun of them for it. If I was going to get something to symbolize the military it'd probably be more along the lines of a yellow ribbon or something, but I doubt I would do that.

if anything ever happened to either my husband or my brother I would get a marine corps inspired tattoo in their honor.

This is the only way I would have anything USMC or EOD on my body. In remembrance of my husband.

I have two tattoos, and plan on getting at least one (possibly two more) but they are covered up. And unless I want someone to see them, they won't. I would hate to be denied a job or something because my tats are showing. IMO it looks unprofessional to have them covering the whole body. For men and women. But to each their own.

This is what DH tells me since I want another, bigger tattoo (I want it on my side so its covered). He said he had a history teacher back in Austin, TX that had sleeves on both arms and on his chest I think but no one ever knew until they saw him leave early (he usually stayed late at the school) and he was a biker but always wore a long sleeve shirt no matter what and had all the collar buttons buttoned.

One can very much be a lady and still have visible tattoos...

No different than getting your significant other's name tattoo'd on...i dont personally see the reasoning behind it because you just never know.

But I dont understand why people get their own name or their kids names on them. I think I know my name without it being tatt'd on my body, and Im pretty sure I remember DD's name as well...but that's just me :-)

I have considered getting an Air Force tattoo..I want an anklet tattoo'd on with the yellow ribbon 'charm hanging off it onto my foot and then the air force wings as a separate charm. I don't regret any of my tattoo's and even if something happened with DH and I it still represents a huge part of my life. I like my tattoo's to tell a story about where I have been, it doesn't matter to me if they are currently relative.

Exactly! Even if something did happen between DH and I, and I had an anchor tattoo, I wouldn't regret it. Without my Dad having been in the Navy and without DH being in the Navy, DH and I would've never met. Without the Navy, I would not be where I'm at in my life, so an anchor tattoo would never be a regret.

If I had a visible anchor tattoo, many of you ladies wouldn't know my story unless I said "I'm Orion from CinC." You wouldn't know that I've been around the military all my life and that it means more to me than just DH being in. Aside from the ladies you know personally, you also don't know if said female has also served, or is serving. IMO, there's too many variables to make a judgment on someone's military tattoo.

Absolutely, it is a part of your life. So I completely agree with this.

Now in gerneal I am not a fan of a wife getting a moto tattoo because they didn't earn it, so to speak. Although I do like the ones where it is wrapped in a heart or wedding band, it seems more truthful to me.

Although I can say with complete certainty that I would never get one, I don't think I would judge anyone who had one. Because I don't judge people who have tattoo's in general even though i would never get one. Although I cannot say that a military member wouldn't be offended because (using the Marines as an example) earning your EGA, and the right to wear it is a HUGE accomplishment and a really big deal,

Are we talking about any motto tattoo or are we just talking about mottos that are military related? Regardless, I also couldn't care less. I plan on getting a "motto" tattoo: "Non mihi, non tibi, sed nobis" which in Latin means "Not for me, not for you, but for us". I am not Latin but it is a motto that my husband and I live by. Every decision we have made in our relationship has never been to benefit the individual but us as a whole.

Although I'd never get a "motto", I have an anchor tattoo that I got almost 2 years ago. The navy is a part of my life and I'm not worried about regretting it at all, like others have said its tells a story and is a part of my life. I may also be the odd one out because I have DH's initials on me, which are also now DS's initials. No regrets.
