ok so my husband really wants an HE washer. No idea why he cares since I dont allow him to do laundry 90 percent of the time. We have a HORRIBLE front load HE one now that takes forever to wash our clothes. I am not a fan.

I like traditional washers and dryers but DH likes HE.

Anyway. I was wondering if anyone has a HE top loader. We have to get a top loader because of a space issue.

Do you like it?

How does it compare to a regular washer/ dryer?
Is it worth the extra money?
We are moving into mil housing so I really dont care about decrease in utilities

Thanks guys!

I have a front load washer and dryer...its HE.... check it out in my mobile uploads. I love it! To be honest, its just pretty. It washes clothes the exact same. Well, my whites do come out whiter than a normal washer and dryer...

We have a top load washer and it is HE...it is a Whirlpool Cabrio. We got it at the MCX last December.

I love it! We opted not to get a front load washer because of the mildew problems that can happen. My DH did a lot of research before we got this washer (and the matching dryer) and it is great. There are multiple settings and the best part is that is does not have a tall agitater...which means we can throw our king size duvet cover in and have plenty of room in the drum.

DH and I have a top load HE GE set and we love it! The set was just over $800 at Lowe's with the military discount, so there really isn't that much of a price difference between our set and a traditional set.

oh wow! That is awesome. Most of the ones I have seen are like 1100-1200 each. I am going to have to look into that

I was a little concerned about the reviews the other consumers gave the washer and dryer, but then I realised that these people were mostly idiots.

This is what my friend has, and she loves it. When my front loader dies, I am buying one.

I am pretty sure all housing is going to eventually start charging for utilities if you go over a certain amount. Even so, the money to pay the utilities is coming out of the military budget so....decreasing usage is always a good idea both for the military and the tax payers.

in the new housing here they not only take all your BAH but you also pay your utility bill on top of that! I know it's not the same everywhere but just something to think about as you'll hopefully have these for years to come.

How much do you all think you save on utilities? We have a front loader he washer and dryer now and I hate it. Also our electric bill is like 500 a month. It was the same amount before we got this washer and dryer. I guess I am not convinced about the save money on utilities thing. Haha it could also be because my husband sucks at laundry and he is the one who uses it (it is in our fl house). I think I will like the top loader much better than our current front loader. I just hate having to push the clothes in and slam the door. Also my hus and doesn't keep the door open and it gets musty. He always has to clean the filter or something cause it stops draining. Sometimes the clothes are soaking wet. Takes forever for them to get dry enough to put in the dryer. Takes triple the amount of time to do laundry. Haha I could go on forever. We don't have very good front loaders though so I think that is part of the problem.

I am looking at the whirpool cabrio and the maytag bravos. I have heard good things about both. I am also excited because lowes is doing a 20% off sale this weekend. I like the ones with the sanitizing feature because we want kids in the near future and I think I want to go cloth diapering.

Hmmm decisions decisions

Make sure you ask about a military discount, they will give you an additional 10% after they take off the 20%.

OMG! I about died at our $400 electric bill. That was for a solid of month of close to 100 degree temps in a 3300sqft house with 7 people living in it, plus we had two extra guests for a week of that period. I can’t imagine paying that much for only 1-2 people. How big is your house? Our electric bill dropped about $10/mo when we got our new washer/dryer.

I think it is 3500 sq feet, It is 5 bedrooms. My husband keeps it at 69 all the time. I am not there to change it. He also keeps all the fans on and we have a pool and the pump always running. We also have 4 refrigerators. It is a man house.  When he isnt there and I get a chance to get down there and I unplug the 3 beer fridges and turn the air, lights, and fans off the bill goes down to 200 a month. I know it is ridiculous. When we move and finally live together together his habits are going to change

yeah I know The houses we qualify for are about 1400 square feet . I will be ok because I have a townhome now and it is 1100 sq feet but it is just me. It really isnt that big of a deal. We dont even go in 2 of the bedrooms. They are guest rooms and I use the closets for my winter clothes. I think not having a pool in the backyard and living a block from the beach is the biggest change. oh well that is life. If i get pregnant and stop working we are going to have to have a serious change in how we live because our income will go down by half so it is all an adjustment but totally worth it

on the otherhand I e-mailed the housing in san diego to see what kind of dryer hookups they have and they said gas. Sucks because i need the washer and dryer right now and I need electric. I sold my townhome and I am moving 2 buildings down and my washer and dryer are staying in the townhome i just sold. I wish I could get something that would work for me now and when I move. I might just have to get a cheap one for the time being and then when I move to SD in 2011 get nice ones. so many things to think about...

That's not bad! Our friends are in that size, with 4 bedrooms, 3 teens, and he's an 06! lol We had a 3 bedroom 1100sqft house, when dh was an 04 and we had 4 kids.

Might be worth getting a cheapy used on off craigslist that you can just turn around and sell when you move.

I think that is what I am going to do. I am so glad I asked. DH thought it was silly  that I asked. We are both from FL where everything is electric. No one has gas anything so it never even occured to him. I would have been MAD if we spent thousands on a washer and dryer and then couldnt even use the dryer when we move. I am only here until June (or March, or whenever I decide I am done living here lol) and I think the cheapy one is the way to go.

If you're so concerned about money and the lifestyle to which you're accustomed, you can keep working after you get pregnant and go back to work after the birth. And what's so wrong with going a block to the beach rather than having a pool in your backyard? From what I understand from your previous posts, you spend most of your time in SC, not Florida where the McMansion is, so it's not much of a loss is it? Maybe you should make those "serious changes to your income" now, instead of putting it on the shoulders of your future child.

My no means was I trying to offend anyone. She asked how big my house
was. I answered. You are right. I am in sc a lot of the time. That is where I
work mon- thurs. Thurs afternoon-monday morning I am in fl with my
husband. Most of my free time I spend in fl. When I am in sc I am working
my butt off so I can have time with my husband. Our house isn't that big.
By no means would I call a 3500 square house a mansion. I have lived 1
block from the beach since I was 5. My parents live on an island. Our house
is now on an island. Also in fl pretty much everyone has a pool. It is just
how it is. Growing up I didn't have 1 friend who didn't have a pool. I go in
the pool every weekend. My husband goes in it everyday. Pool and beach
not that big of a deal. I actuaally think it will be too cold for me to go in
the pool. We will have to make changes to our lifestyle. We aren't going
to be broke. My husband makes good money. My changes in our lifestyle I
mean we probably won't be going out to eat everyday for lunch and
dinner. We won't go on 4 vacations a year. We won't be buying new cars.
We won't go shopping whenever we feel like it. We will have to think
about what we buy. Like I said before it really isn't a big deal. I was in
graduate school 2 years ago and lived on raman, spaghetti and whatever
free food was at the union. I could live off pretty much nothing I am one
of the most frugal people. My husband it will be a change. I said we need
to make a budget and he freaked. I don't look at his spending and he
doesn't look at mine but I know he frivlously spends. We have enough
money in our savings to live comfortably for over a yeah so thank you for
worrying about us but we are fine.

I could be completely wrong about this...but when we were looking into getting our w/d, I *think* someone told me that some (or most?) gas w/d's can also be electric, but electric's can't necessarily be gas as well--make sense? I guess if it's gas compatible already it's not that big of a deal to also have it be able to plug into a wall making it electric.
