Hello ladies i have been so busy with my kiddos latley that i havent been on here. i see that there has been a few people that have already moved out this way. Welcome! well its now been 4 mths since we have been here and its not the east coast.. Make the best of it though. Oh and be careful where you eat fyi... I dont remember the screen name of whoever wrote the blog on the buffets but ive heard of a lot of people getting sick from those resturants. Just wanted to give you a heads up. There are a few places that are good but you just really got to be careful.
I hope your all ready for cold because we have skipped fall and gone right to winter here...lol it even snowed yesterday. oh my....from what ive heard that is the norm here ive met a lot of wives now and they have been here from 1 week to 6 yrs.....yes that would be 6 yrs. oh my i dont know what i would do...you will understand when your here.
As for the drive here. it took me driving my truck with my 2 daughters, following my hubby in his truck with the animals puppy and kitty...lol and well it was long from ny about 26 hrs. And I realized penns. is a VERY long and boaring state. lol
Hope everyone has a safe trip out here and if you have any questions feel free to ask.

Hey Dawn!! How have u been? I have heard about how cold it is there already. My hubby made it into Riley 2 days ago to get things started and he was like it is already freezing up there. I was just starting to enjoy the 70 degree fall weather here in Alabama. I am not sure that I am ready for that kind of cold just yet, haha |

I'm stationed at Lackland, AFB, but my fiance is stationed at FT RILEY. I just spent the past week up there with him and it snowed :-) I love Ft Riley. It's big and open and very pretty. Theyre building some awesome new housing on post that DF drove me past. The surrounding area of Junction City isnt the best, but Manhattan is a lil better, and Topeka is like an hour away its more "city-ish". I'd much rather be at Ft Riley than Lackland... but then again Im from the North East and all this heat is killing me. If you have any specific questions, let me know... I go up there about once a month to visit him for the past 5 months.. he's coming here for the holidays though. Dont be so worried... One of the Brigades at Ft Riley JUST got back (DF was working Re-Deployment for them) and another Brigade left shortly before that... I don't know if there are any scheduled to leave the beginning of next year, but thats the military. It'll all work out. Nice pretty area though :-) |

By any chance, is there anyone who has gone to the closest Barnes & Noble bookstore from Manhattan? Mapquest says it's about an hour away, is it? I work at one now and I'd like to transfer instead of quit when we move, but not sure I will if it's going to be a lot of travel time. Thanks! |

I wished Manhattan had barns noble...
but Manhattan has bookstore and cafe store called " Haystings"(maybe spel wron sorry) in the town same place "hoby loby". it is not bad.. rent DVD , used/new DVD , CD, some marchandise, magazines, books.. and cafe.
Topeka about 55 miles away from Ft Riley, they are barns noble, bigger mall.. decent place they have.. Manhattan has really tiny mall.. To west about same mile over 50 mils from base, Salina they are pretty good , growing up place.. but no Barns noble.. I guess borders does not have untill Kansas city.... |

Yeah the Barnes & Noble I'm looking at transfering to is in Topeka. I'm just wondering if that'd be a ridiculous distance to travel everyday. |

I think total 60 mile so it should take time about 50 min to get barns noble from Ft Riley..
If you decide to live at Manhattan, probably little shorter than on post like 20 mintues shorter.. |

haha I love that Barnes & Noble! DF and i go there on our way to the airport in Kansas City, Mo when I'm going home. Usually when I visit we're not doing anything all the special. We like driving into Topeka or we go to the movie theater in Manhattan. Mostly we just hang out on post at his apartment. |

Are there any spouses here who work on post? I'm going to apply to the Fort Riley Library. Is it likely I'll get it if there is a position open? I'm still only a girlfriend, not a wife, so I can't get preference. Thanks! |

I asked the For Riley Library about position. Even you are not spouse of active duty, you can come over to library, fil out application and talk to manager. that is one of employee said to me today. Good luck! |

The information exchange on this topic has been really helpful, but I do have one question that hasn't been asked. My husband received 'tentative' orders to Fort Riley and after doing some research, I noticed that there is no on post high school. We will be moving out with our high school age and elementary age children. Any suggestions on which high school would be best?
