I have been hearing often lately that it is becoming "worth it" financially to move yourself...even from/especially to Hawaii.  Have any of you ladies done a DITY move, know of any rule changes in payment, etc?  It was always my impression that it was more hassle than it was worth, although we've done partial DITY moves before and been happy (that was 8 years ago, talk about homesteading!).......

How can you do a DITY from HI?

We moved ourselves once....and only because we bought a house and the Navy obviously wouldn't move us from our rental. There is NO way I will ever, ever, ever do that again. It was such a pain, and there is not enough $$ in the world to entice me, lol. I would pay 100% out of pocket if I had to.

Of course, we had over 18,000lbs of stuff...and have even more now. If you don’t have much it probably wouldn’t be as painful...but I still wouldn’t do it.

If you do a DITY last that I heard the money that you don't use to move you will be charged taxes on... so just keep that in mind. Personally we did a DITY move way back when DH was first in and even with DH and I it was stressful... now with kids & pets no body could pay me enough to move ourselves... I'll let someone else do the work. I've got enough stuff to handle during a move! lol

The cases I've heard about people DITY from HI were using those POD type things...and apparently it was very lucrative for them and they had more control over their shipment and it took about half the time to get their things. I've never considered DITY before, but now that these POD things can be delivered and you can take a couple weeks to pack your own belonging and move them in, then the PODS are transported by the company, it is something I'm thinking about. I also heard that it depends on where you DITY from....Ft. Lewis area has some of the highest rates for labor, thus a DITY move pays more.....
