One could argue the above point with Twain were he still among us. One can’t argue the fact that our Soldiers, Sailors, Airman and Marines look good -- really good -- in uniform. Who doesn’t get a chill upon seeing a service member decked out in dress blues, all shiny and pretty, or looking rough and tough with war paint on his face?
Aesthetics and hormones aside, military uniforms, ranks and insignias have a larger influence on our life. While they may not make the man per say, they certainly identify him more than many spouses are aware. They represent his military resume on his chest and sleeves.
You may not personally wear a uniform but your well-intended efforts to know the difference between an Army Private and a Navy Admiral may at some point be appreciated by your loved one and certainly by others who wear the uniform proudly. Knowing the basics may also save you personal and professional embarrassment along your own path as well.

As complicated as they may seem, Military uniforms offer clarity to those wearing it.
Back in his day, George Washington sought such clarity when he first established the practice of wearing insignia in the Continental Army. Funding for the army was as tight then as it is now, and the money simply wasn't in the budget for uniforms. Instead, rank was indicated by a knot of ribbon in the hat of a service member.
Later in history, funding was found and uniforms became a part of the military picture. Throughout the ages, the uniforms of the services have evolved, with both French and British influence, into what they are today.
As you may guess, each branch of service has different uniforms for use under specific circumstances. One type of uniform is used for formal functions; another is used for life in the desert and yet another for day-to-day life in the office. There are BDUs, ABUs, ACUs, DCUs, mess uniforms, class-A greens, service and dress blues. And if that is not complicated enough, the ensembles must be worn a specific way and under specific circumstances.
A Walking Resume
If you find yourself stationed with only one branch of the service, consider your task today an easy one. Those stationed in “purple” communities, where all branches of the military work, have it a bit tougher. Pity the E1 stationed in such a community because he spends a great deal of time saluting others getting from one end of the installation to the other.
Again, think of military uniforms as walking resumes. While the trappings certainly won’t divulge all the details about the wonderfully unique person wearing it, they will clue you in on some basic details.
- You can tell his rank by looking at his insignia, typically worn on the shoulder or collar.
