When it comes to settling in to your new duty station, the military understands that you’ll need some time to find a place to live. In fact, they’ll even give service members up to ten days of house hunting leave (more for overseas moves) in addition to their travel leave to get there and their regular vacation leave.
It’s up to the service member (and their current and gaining command’s schedules) whether to take this time before they arrive or once they get there, and there are pros and cons to each. By doing house hunting well in advance, you can ensure and set up housing and know what to expect as soon as you arrive at your new place of duty, which can often ease the transition and speed up the time it takes to make it feel like “home”.
On the other-hand, if you use this leave as soon as you get there, (tacked on to the travel leave) you’ll also be able to receive your TLE during that time and have a chance to settle into the area as a family.) Commands, while usually generous with this leave, do have the right to deny it based on needs…for example if things are just too hectic on either side (leaving or coming) they might not be able to spare your hubby even if they want to, so think about what will work best for both your family and your command when you make your decision.
