So if you decrease your food by just 500 calories per day, you can reasonably expect to lose one pound of weight per week. If you increase exercise and burn an extra 500 calories per day, in addition to lowering your food intake by 500 calories, then you can expect to lose 2 pounds per week. Any more weight loss is generally considered dangerous.
